We use the Foalert Foaling System on our mares. This system uses a transmitter with a set of magnets that separate when the mare begins to foal. When the magnets separate, it sets off an alarm. The battery in the transmitter runs down when the magnets are separated. You will probably see us run in to put a spare magnet in the transmitter while the mare is foaling, and also to remove the unit from the mare. Removing the transmitter and magnets just requires cutting a couple of small stitches, but is easier to do while the mare is still down.
